The new Nissan LEAF is an all-electric five-passenger, five-door compact hatchback that is the world’s first affordable, zero-emission car.
The LEAF is powered by an 80kW electric motor and 24kWh lithium-ion battery pack, enabling it to travel approximately 100 miles on a single charge. The LEAF doesn’t sacrifice features for efficiency either! The standard features include a navigation system, six-speaker audio audio system with CD/USB/AUX and satellite radio, Bluetooth phone system, Intelligent keyless entry, push button start, automatic climate control, 60/40 folding rear seats and cruise control. All the usual safety features are here as well. This includes six airbags, active front head restraints, stability and traction control, security system and front belt pretensioners are all standard. Q: What happens if you run out of electricity on the road?
A: If you should need it, Nissan’s roadside assistance service is available as part of your warranty coverage. However, the CARWINGS® telematics system in the Nissan LEAF™ will constantly update to show both vehicle and battery status, as well as charging locations, to help avoid such a situation.
Q: I live in an apartment. How would I go about charging the car?

Q: Will it plug into a regular household outlet?
A: It will charge on a regular 110/120V, 20 amp dedicated outlet. This is considered a “trickle charge,” which means it would charge at a slower rate. For home charging, we recommend a home-charging dock on a dedicated 208-240V, 40-amp circuit.
Q: How many charging cycles can the energy storage device survive?
A: Like all lithium ion batteries, the Nissan LEAF™ battery will experience gradual capacity loss over time. We expect the battery to last over 10 years, however, there may be a gradual loss of capacity of 30% or more depending on your driving patterns, and the effect on your battery. The battery can be used afterward for storage applications.
Q: What do I do if I want to go farther than 100 miles in one trip?
A: The Nissan LEAF™’s CARWINGS® system will be able to show you charging locations along your route.
Q: Is the Nissan LEAF™ going to have an onboard charging system of some kind for emergency back up?
A: Your Nissan LEAF™ will be delivered with a 110/120V trickle charge cable that works with the onboard charging system. As the name implies, this will be primarily used for opportunity charging and is not recommended to be your primary method of charging. Nissan recommends using a home-charging dock which uses a 208-240V dedicated line in your home for charging your vehicle.
Q: If you run out of power will a “AAA” tow truck have a recharger or would you need to be towed to a recharge station?
A: The car is equipped with a telematics system called CARWINGS® which will help you locate charging stations before this happens. Additionally, AAA has recently announced an EV-charging pilot program.
Q: Does the navigation system list charging station locations?
A: The Nissan LEAF™ comes equipped with CARWINGS®. This in-car telematics system will show you battery power and status, charging stations and more. You can also download the ChargePoint app that shows nationwide charging stations.
Q: Can you charge the battery even if it’s not empty?

Q: How long will it be before you can charge a car anywhere? Like at a gas station?
A: Nissan is working to encourage third party and government organizations to grow the charging infrastructure. As electric vehicle acceptance grows, we expect additional growth. Q: What is the estimated time for full charging with 110v, 220v and quick-charge charge stations?
A: Starting from a depleted battery, about 20 hours at 110-120V (depending on amperage), approximately 7 hours at 208-240V (depending on amperage) and about 30 minutes at 480V (quick-charging station).
Q: Is the charger built into the vehicle?
A: Yes. To charge, you simply need to plug into an appropriate charging dock which supplies power safely to the onboard charger.
Q: Is there a timer that allows you to set what time the charging starts and stops?

Q: How can I test drive a Nissan LEAF™?

Q: When plugging the car in, is the car is “smart” enough to pull electricity during non-peak hours?
A: You can program the car to charge whenever you like. Most people will charge overnight at off-peak times like their cell phone. Please contact your local electric company for exact off-peak times.
Q: Is the home-charging station weatherproof?
A: AeroVironment®, Nissan’s preferred home-charging provider, supplies a weatherproof station.
Q: If I want to “prewire” a new home for a future Nissan LEAF™ owner, what is required?
A: The home-charging dock will require a 208-240V, 40-amp dedicated circuit connected to a breaker. The charging dock will need to be hard wired directly to the circuit by a certified electrician.
Q: How much will my electric bill go up by recharging my Nissan LEAF™ at home?
A: This will vary by vehicle usage and your electric rate. We strongly recommend that you contact your electricity provider to discuss special rates or incentives that may be available prior to getting an in-home assessment for your charging dock.

A: Like any battery, usage and age will lead to a gradual loss of capacity which will impact your driving range.

Q: The electric motor is smaller than a gas engine. The gas tank is gone and the battery is under the floor. Is there more luggage space?
A: No gas tank means great storage space for the size of the car. It’s very spacious.
Q: What generates cabin heat without engine coolant?
A: The Nissan LEAF™ uses an enclosed electric heater.
Q: Is there a mobile app available to monitor the vehicle’s charging status?
A: If you own a Nissan LEAF™ and have an active CARWINGS® subscription, you can use the free iPhone, Android or Blackberry app to check status of battery charge, begin charging, check when battery charge is complete, and see estimated driving range. You can also turn the vehicle’s climate control system on or off using this app.
Q: Does it have air conditioning, CD/MP3 player, GPS, etc.?
A: The Nissan LEAF™ offers loads of features, including a/c, nav, stereo, power steering and windows, Bluetooth and cold weather features such as a battery warmer, heated steering wheel and heated seats in both the front and rear.
Q: Does the Nissan LEAF™ come with a moonroof?
A: No it does not. A moonroof would add weight, affect headroom and create unwanted drag, which can affect range.
Q: Does the Nissan LEAF™ have cruise control?
A: Yes, cruise control is standard.
Q: Does it have a rear camera? I love this feature on my Nissan Murano.
A: Yes, the rear camera is available on the SL model.
Q: What kind of stereo system does Nissan LEAF™ have? Can it play my iPod?
A: The Nissan LEAF™ audio system is integrated to the navigation system and will support XM, AM/FM, CD (w/ WMA/MP3 capability) and USB interface for iPods and other MP3 players.

A: There is no transmission in an electric car, but the experience is similar to driving an automatic.

Q: Is it true that the Nissan LEAF™ has no fluids like coolant, transmission, steering, brake…?
A: Many fluids associated with engines are eliminated (motor oil, transmission fluid, etc.). It does have brake fluid, coolant and washer fluid.
Q: Can you schedule the heater to come on like you will be able to do for the A/C?
A: Yes – you are able to control heat and a/c functions through timers and an Internet tool accessible from any web enabled device (smart phone, laptop, etc.).

A: The Nissan LEAF™ uses a cellular-type network. There is no WiFi capability currently available.

A: No tailpipe! The Nissan LEAF™ runs on 100% electricity, while a hybrid uses a combo of electricity and gas. In a traditional hybrid, even the electricity is generated by the gas engine.
Q: Has anyone considered solar panels on the vehicle for recharging the battery?
A: The Nissan LEAF™ SL model comes standard with a small solar panel on the rear spoiler to help charge the 12V accessory battery.
Q: How long will the battery last? Can it be recycled?

Q: Does the Nissan LEAF™ use regenerative braking to help recharge the battery?
A: Yes – every time you coast or apply the brakes, the electric motor acts as a electric generator. Nissan LEAF™ recovers some of the energy created by the braking and stores it in the battery.

A: Braking is regenerative to help maintain battery charge and optimize driving range, and is 4-wheel disc.
Q: Assuming the power steering is electric (vs. hydraulic), is there a solid steering shaft, or is it drive-by-wire?
A: Solid steering shaft with electric power assist.
Q: What does the drivetrain look like? AC induction motors? Does it have wheel motors or a differential?
A: Inverter, electric motor and reduction gear set. Output shaft connects via CV joint to hub-and-carrier assembly.
Q: Are electric cars the same as hydrogen cars?
A: No – hydrogen vehicles use hydrogen combustion or fuel cells. The Nissan LEAF™ is 100% electric and rechargeable.
